Feelings and Food.

Food is an amazing gift. We can choose to use food to fuel our bodies, for comfort, when we are angry, overwhelmed, for celebration and for pleasure. Food is not always used to eat just because we are hungry. Even though one of foods main purposes is to satisfy hunger to nourish our bodies to keep us alive.

Clients will come to me for coaching and want to lose weight. They tell me they have tried every diet, every program, every meal plan, and they can’t seem to lose weight. They also tell me that they have lost weight, but seem to have trouble keeping it off. No diet or program seems to work for them.

Why do so many people have the same issues with food? Why can dieting become the most difficult thing in our lives?

It has to do with feelings and food. When you go on a diet or weight loss program, you become disciplined into doing things their way. You have structured meals and they set you up to eat less. You may not realize it, but they are in control of you.

At some point during the diet you are tired of being out of control. You want to eat what you want to eat. You don’t want to eat their three hundred calorie meal they have pre-packaged for you. You don’t want to make their special soup to help you drop seven pounds in two weeks. You start to have an emotional response to the diet, and then you rebel.

It’s not about eating. It’s about the feelings that are going along with the eating.
